Air heat pumps: advantages, disadvantages, prices

Apr.14.2017

What should you know about air source heat pumps?

Air source heat pumps are devices that take the heat from the environment & deliver it to your apartment or a house. In this article, we will consider a heating of a house of 200 sq. meters.

The principle of work of heat pumps is to take the solar energy that is accumulated in the air using physical heat exchange and to give it to you. It works even when the outside air temperature is as low as -20°C!

There are two kinds of air source heat pumps: air-to-water and air-to-air. The second one may heat up:

• under floor heating system,

• water in a boiler,

• water in radiators

The second one is used to heat up the air in your dwelling only. It does nothing besides it unless combined with the other heating systems fueled from a pump or otherwise. What is the reason to choose the second one, you ask? It is the price of installation and the energy consumption. They are significantly lower from the first option.

The table above briefly shows what the installation and maintenance costs will be. Saying ‘maintenance’, we don’t mean that you actually pay t someone to make your air source heat pumps UK work, as all they need to work is electricity. So, this is the cost of electricity to make them run. With it, this is far not the same than to use electricity to heat up your house in the usual way, as with the same house of 200 sq. meters heated up with condensing boiler, it will be £1005 yearly, and oil boiler takes £1615 yearly. Or course, if your house is twice smaller from the mentioned size, the numbers will be lower (not in half, though) but the comparative picture is understood.

The thing with heat pumps is that they produce up to 4 times bigger kW of heat that kW of the consumed electric energy. It means your heating efficiency after heat pumps are installed increases in around three times from the one you have now.

Pros and cons of air source heat pumps UK

Heat pumps manufacturers like Husky Heat Pump tell that air source heat pumps UK have these pros:

• Lowering your energy bills – this is the most important issue for the installation, with recoupment equal to about 7-9 years,

• Long life span, around 25 years that makes your heating system profitable comparing to classical systems for around two dozen years after the point of recoupment,

• No carbon output during heating up*,

And these cons:

• Ice frost may be condensed on the outer module that can make it stop working – if your climate is prone to such,

• The outdoor air-to-air heat pump is somewhat noisy and thus, must be installed on a wall of some technical premise of a house,

• The maximum temperature in taps is lower that produced by conventional heaters.

* as for the carbon footprint, you may tell that if you use energy to make a pump work, it means you are leaving a carbon footprint after all. It is true only if you are connected to the power plants-generated electricity. If you use one of these Tesla-made or other companies-made solar batteries with 2-3 home accumulators, you produce electricity for your house entirely ceasing making environmental carbon footprint.
